Q: Since there is so much information on the internet, how has that affected the book publishing business?
I know that when the Xerox machine came into use, it was very bad for the music publishing business. Therefore, I am wondering about books of all kinds being affected by such widespread use of the internet, especially since there are constant efforts at upgrading the information. Ta!

A: Have a look at the FT and the Guardian, I think you'll find it has allowed publishers to come closer to their customers saving the costs of mediators, it has allowed for products (particularly journals and other professional and higher education materials) to be more customised and has allowed publishers to make higher profits due to less stockage and printed paper costs. I think you'll also find 3 school education publishers are currently on sale because they have not been able to keep up with the ebusiness trend, as their market does not allow them to. I don't think it has affected print trade much as people still like to read a book or a newspaper first hand and be able to put it aside and come back to it whenever. But check WHS Smith Story and the Independent books store stories ... a bit sad. Check the Pearson Story for the .com fiasco within the FT and have a look at the AMAZON story.

I received a large number of books from some of my professors who were throwing out textbooks so I put them online but I am running low. How do people get low cost books to sell online?

A: Check with your local libraries. After so many years, they throw out hundreds of books. Our local library has a room full of boxes of books they are getting rid of and anyone can take them...for free! Also check your local flea market because alot of people buy, sell, and trade books there. You can find them for like a quarter a piece! Good luck to you!

Q: How did John D. Rockefeller managed to fund his first business-venture as a book-keeper?
He was a book-keeper at first and earned meagre wages but still he managed to start his first business, a food and grain firm, within 2-3 years of getting his job. How did he fund it? Moreover, how did he later fund his oil refineries? Please provide some info. in addition to the Wikipedia article. Thanks!

A: I offer here a quote from the web page identified below. "Hewitt & Tuttle, a small company of produce shippers and commission merchants employed him as an assistant bookkeeper. Rockefeller worked hard and impressed his employers, arranging complicated transportation deals moving freight by railroad, canal and lake boats. He began to trade for his own account and his combination of caution; precision and resolve brought him to the attention of the Cleveland business community. In 1859, several months before his 20th birthday, Rockefeller entered into business for himself, forming a partnership with a neighbor, Maurice Clark. Each man put up $2,000, John had $1,000 he had saved and he borrowed the other $1,000 from his father. Due to Rockefeller’s natural business abilities, Clark & Rockefeller earned a small profit their first year in business and the company became very successful." So apperantly he saved some of his income from his job as a bookkeeper and saved profits from his own speculative transactions using the company's ships. It helps to have an uncle who can help you oult with a large loan. $1000 was a princely sum back then. Naturally the truth has been polished just a bit but he must have been shrewd businessman and a risk-taker engaging in some kind of arbitrage using the company's transportation to make his deals possible while he worked for the shipper.

Q: I read a business book that said to markup product 8 to 10 times price. Is that even possible?
This book is a New York Times Best Seller! I know most stores markup product 70 percent wholesale price, but what kind of products can you mark up 800 to 1000 percent? It seems a little too wishful.

A: Lots. Think about what you pay for a specific part you might need at a home improvement store. Then consider how much that molded piece of metal or plastic cost to produce. (Just one example.)

Q: Is there a way to find out about government grants to start up a business without buying that book from Lesko?
I'm looking into starting my own trucking company. I am presently putting together a business plan. I heard, a million times, that it may be possible to get start up money from the government and I was curious to know whether or not I needed to purchase that book from Lesko or is that information available for free somewhere else. Thanks for the feedback!

A: You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture. Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list from Lesko that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business. It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK - lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born. Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html... "The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments." Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs. http://www.cfda.gov http://www.grants.gov http://gtionline.fdncenter.org http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol66/grants.htm http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html

Q: Can anyone suggest a good book to use as a starting point on how to run a small business with Quickbooks?
I'm looking for a good book which has great detail on starting a small business with quickbooks as the bookkeeping/accounting software. All I have been able to find are books on running a business or using quickbooks, but no luck with both in the same book. My hope is that I'll get valuable information if the book is aimed at both of these concepts and not just one.

A: Quickbooks 2007 for dummies Give that a shot. http://books.google.com/books?id=R_XVBrvZgFwC&pg=PA37&lpg=PA37&dq=quickbooks+for+dumb&source=web&ots=E6y92Mb4eC&sig=lO1AUb0F1DiXG9UFcdK56ihK0oA&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=9&ct=result#PPP1,M1

Q: how to get a cash flow for my small book store business?
i'm losing a book store business due to bad management i guess! in that book store, i only provide stuff like selling stationary, refreshment, and printing service...yet, not loads of customers come to me :( what should i do? could you please provide me with ideas which can help in improving the management of a book store? what are the attractive tips which can bring loads of customers daily? please i really need your help in showing the best managing way in building a successful book store... thanks... smiley

A: Vary your stock. If someone looks around your shop and the stock is the same 2 or 3 times then they dont need to keep looking because they know what you have got. Order books so you receive a delivery everyday. Have a special section for new stock and put signs up to tell customers. Main wholesalers have ready made signs such as New Stock Arriving Daily.

Q: What is a good essay question for Oedipus Rex, Running in the Family, or the book Fifth Business?
Oedipus Rex by Sophocles Running in the Family by Michael Ondaatje Fifth Business by Robertson Davies It can be about any of these three books. It is for an oral inclass presentation..

A: What do they share in terms of Narrative structure? For Fifth Business, you can talk about the usage of "masks".....or the concept of Justice in Oedipus Rex.

Q: A good book about starting a business?
I want a book that deals with the details of starting and running a business; things like legal and financial considerations. I want to become au fait with the nitty gritty. I don't want a 'self help' book that trains your attitude and confidence with ego boosting mantras. You know the sort. Thank you.

A: Lloyds TSB - "Small business guide" Sara Williams "An essential for many small businesses" - Daily Mail Personally I've found it to be a good read. Starts at the very beginning of the idea process, looks at premises, building the image, your rights and responsibilities an employer.
