Q: What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of investing with an ADR instead of a foreign stock?

A: Primarily you negate the currency risk; ie, your investment (as an ADR) isn't going to fall in value if the currency of the country the foreign firm trades in falls vs the dollar. ADR's use US dollars even though they're shares of a foreign firm. There's not really any disadvantages of using an ADR listing unless you want currency exposure (to improve your return if the foreign currency changes in value to your advantage).

Q: should we have a web site that reveals the faces and adr. of people who are convicted of cruelty to animals?
and show their parents to prove what inbreeding can produce.

A: I think it's a great idea. And i also think, there should be web sites for criminals of all kinds. This'll make people think twice before committing any crimes. It'll also give every body a chance to recognize criminals in their surrounding. For instance, a pedophile is released and leaves next to you. So, you're going to be cautious about it. NOT, to see your self in night news when your child is molested cause, you'll find out later on that, your neighbour used to be a "this and that"!

Q: what does ADR mean in stock market ?
I bought a foreign stock, its name ended with ADR, what does that mean ?

A: An American Depositary Receipt (ADR) is how the stock of most foreign companies trades in United States stock markets. Each ADR is issued by U.S. depositary banks and represents one or more shares of a foreign stock or a fraction of a share. If investors own an ADR they have the right to obtain the foreign stock it represents, but U.S. investors usually find it more convenient to own the ADR. The price of an ADR is often close to the price of the foreign stock in its home market, adjusted for the ratio of ADRs to foreign company shares. Individual shares of a foreign corporation represented by an ADR are called American Depositary Shares (ADS).

Q: why do companies based in israel list on the nyse and nasdaq, not as adr's but as regular us treated shareS?
SHOULD TRADE AS ADR? NO?

A: Because they have done the paperwork to comply with listing requirements and you are actually buying the shares. ADRs are created by a trust company who buys the unlisted stock and then sell pieces of paper backed by the shares. Think of it as a non-diversified mutual fund consisting of 1 company.

Q: What's your take on mediation and ADR? is it the new legal way in handling things?
Is there a future in this? It's rarely new. Considering getting a Masters in Conflict Resolution. Sounds good but if anyone has some advice or input that would be great. It's a fairly new specialty and segment in law. Many corporations I believe are opting to take this route rather than spend large and unnecessary amounts of money going through a time consuming litigation.

A: I have a masters in conflict resolution. I adore the mediation process. It can be a bit difficult for a non-attorney mediator in a good-ol-boy club county where the lawyers hold the monopoly. But there are other avenues if you're willing to work outside the courts. There are so many areas of specialty that you can go into. I am NOT in favor of corporate-owned mediators though. I think that if the corporation is paying the mediators bills through payroll, it disqualifies the mediator as a neutral third party and places the interest in favor of the corporation. But it's done. I am also partial to mediation over arbitration. I like that in a mediation, both parties come to their own agreement, as opposed to a binding resolution imposed by an arbiter. I am also opposed to the typical lawyer's form of mediation we call "shuttle diplomacy." I favor a facilitative mediation where the parties are kept face-to-face at the table to develop their own agreement and deal with the relationship issues.

Q: How much does ADR correlate with actual equity?
Currently NYSE:HBD HDFC BANK is trading 10% down, does it mean tomorrow the stock will open 10% lower in Indian Market

A: <<>> Usually the correlation is excellent. <<>> There is a good chance that it will be roughly 10% lower, but it is not a certainty. News can come out between the time the NYSE closes and the time the Indian market opens. The exchange rate between the dollar and the rupee could change, but usually the change over a short time period is small enough that it will not have a significant impact.

Q: How does a GDR/ADR work in an Indian market ? How are they issued and how does it work ?

A: They work quite well in an Indian market. They are issued through automated vending machines. Be sure to have plenty of local currency as they can be quite pricey. Bombay has many of these vending machines. Good luck.

Q: Does anyone know what the ADR Division at the Bank of New York does for the bank? What bank activities are?
the employees in that department responsible for doing? Thanks, Nancy

A: The Bank of New York is a Depository for Receipts. http://www.adrbny.com/home_dr.jsp so I imagine the letters D and R in ADR stand for Depository Receipts, however, I don't see a division with that name listed on the bank's web site. http://www.adrbny.com/dr_directory.jsp Aha ADR = American Depository Receipts http://www.bankofny.com/htmlpages/npr_2004_1420_4539343236344336393543433436343741453432363841354544394334434631.htm

Q: how does currency risk affect ADR s?
If you basically own the foreign stock and it is denominated in the home currency as ADR, how are you exposed to currency risk? You don't have to exchange money back to your home currency. I don't get it.

A: You are not . if that stock is in a foriegn currency it will stay that way unless you sell it and change the money to your home currency . the fluctations in currency shouldn't have any effects on you , but there maybe something in your question that you did't explain . but maybe as well that somebody is playing mean on you .
